Elle | How Drag Queens Shaped the Biggest Makeup Trends (Webby Nominated)

Thick, ombré block eyebrows, heavily contoured cheeks, blinding highlighter, fluttering false eyelashes. Picture a Bratz doll—or Kylie Jenner. Some call it “Instagram makeup.” Some call it a “beat” face. What it really is is decades of quiet, but powerful, influence from the drag community. Before YouTube, before Instagram, before “influencers,” now-common knowledge makeup techniques like contouring and baking were used by drag queens in the dressing rooms of clubs. They were passed on by word of mouth, taught by either peers or older performers (called drag mothers) who’d take newcomers under their wings. In our latest project, BEAT, we speak to artist and renowned drag queen Sasha Velour, Lady Gaga’s glam team, creative and fashion director Nicola Formichetti, and others, on how drag queens shaped the beauty industry as we know it, today.

All That’s Gold Does Not Glitter

During the Karl Lagerfeld Pirelli calendar launch in Moscow, Renato Montagner, Creative Director of Pirelli P Zero, commissioned artist Scott Campbell to create two signature projects. To engrave a Pirelli tire and to design a special edition P Zero bike jacket by Dainese. In the summer of 2011, Campbell began working on these pieces in his Brooklyn studio in New York.

The First X Lab | EXR x Krink x Zuek

Artist Craig Costello aka KR is known worldwide for his public murals as well as for his role as owner/operator of Krink Inc. KR was commissioned by EXR to paint a new mural for the launch of "The X House" their new flagship store in Seoul, South Korea.

For this project, photographer Alessandro Zuek Simonetti captured KR's creative approach in the excution of this 2015 mural. Simonetti's final photographs were showcased in "The X House" gallery on view to the public for the grand opening of "The X House". In addition EXR, KR, and Simonetti selected a photo shot by Simonetti to create a limited run garment. This video captures this creative collaboration uniting art, photography, and fashion and is displayed throughout EXR stores in South Korea.
